Frozen door lock what to do?

Frozen door lock

When it's really cold, you may not be able to fit the key in your door lock because the inside is frozen. If this happens frequently, it is advisable to take measures to avoid having water in your lock, which will eventually turn to gel when the temperature is too low.

To avoid freezing, you must regularly lubricate your lock with suitable products. Some will advise you, for example, to use glycerin, petroleum jelly, or even brake fluid. However, the best and safest solution is to use a suitable lock lubricant, which can be found for less than 10$ in DIY stores.

What to do in case of a frozen lock?

If your lock is already frozen and you are stranded outside your home, for example, you can use a lighter or matches if you or one of your neighbors have them. Simply bring your key into contact with the flame for a few seconds to heat it, then gently insert your key into the lock, also leaving it for a few seconds without turning it. The frost should melt and then allow you to operate the lock.

For regions where frost is frequent, it is also possible to buy a lock defroster, which attaches to the keyring and can even be used for the car lock. This device is equipped with a rod that heats and is inserted in the lock to remove the frost. Some models are also equipped with an LED lamp or a frost level indicator.

Locksmith Tampa, on the other hand, often uses powdered graphite to thaw locks, which helps evaporate the water and keep the lock frost-free for a certain time. However, this powder must be handled carefully because it is very messy, and the stains will not disappear.
