Packing moving boxes: 9 Tips & Tricks

You don't move too often. That means you probably don't have a 1-2-3 answer to the question: "how do you pack a moving box?" have. No problem, that's what you have us (and Google) for. This blog will teach you how to pack moving boxes like a pro!

When do you start packing moving boxes?

Good preparation is half the job. But when do you start packing your moving boxes? It is, of course, not at all practical to put everything in boxes when you still need half of it… In our moving checklist, you can see exactly how many weeks in advance it is best to start packing, which items you should pack first, and which protective packaging material is required.

Where do you start packing moving boxes?

Well, where do you start packing? It may be a no-brainer but start with the stuff you barely use. If you have a shed, attic, garage or basement, it is probably full of stuff you don't need every day. So that's a good place to start. Don't pack the things you need until the last minute.

Tips & Tricks for packing moving boxes

Use these tips & tricks to pack moving boxes like a pro!

1.      Pack moving boxes per room

Place a number of moving boxes in each room and pack the boxes per room. That will save you when you have to unpack everything. What is now in your garage will soon also be in your garage. In addition, it helps you get started by placing some boxes in every room two weeks before your move and putting the things you don't use here. Packing a few small things now step-by-step will save a lot of effort later on.

2.      Labels – a small piece of paper can save you a lot of trouble.

This is especially useful when unpacking. Use tags or labels on your moving boxes and write down in which room the box should be placed. This way, you won't have to drag up and down moving boxes while they are already inside.

3.      Pack fragile items

Okay, we'll make a small exception to our first rule. It is best to pack fragile items such as crockery in your towels. It is perfect as a filling material, and you have to take them with you, immediately saving some plastic and paper! We also advise you not to put all your fragile items together. If a moving box breaks, all your fragile items are lost in one fell swoop.

4.      Not too heavy

An overfull moving box… That is asking for trouble! Certainly, crockery, cooking utensils, and pans that are often (logically) put together can cause problems. I have personally experienced that the bottom of a moving box clatters. Moving boxes can generally carry a maximum of 10 kg. A professional moving box (such as the one you rent in our moving shop) can support up to x kg.

5.      Fold moving boxes properly.

Fold your moving boxes properly. Otherwise, the bottom will fall out soon enough, and your things will be on the floor in no time...

6.      Electrical equipment

TVs, printers, computers and laptops can certainly fit in a moving box, but it is much easier to put these devices in their original packaging. Of course, you may have thrown it away a while ago. Then keep in mind that you protect your equipment against scratches. You can use towels or tea towels for this, or use bubble wrap.

Pack cords and loose parts separately put them in sandwich bags, and stick them to the corresponding device.

7.      Keep 'em dry!

It might be the #1 enemy of any moving box. Water or liquid. Of course, you can't do much about a downpour outside, but we also see often enough that moving boxes are sabotaged from the inside by liquids. Just think of shampoos, soaps, detergents, or other cleaning products that can ruin a moving box. Therefore, put plastic bags around bottles or other items that can be used before you put them in a moving box.

8.      Books

They are nice and straight, often all somewhat the same size, and you can stack them conveniently next to each other in a moving box. That often means that all your books fit in one moving box. Nice and easy, right? Error! Putting all your books in a normal moving box can only lead to one thing: A stack of books that ends up on the sidewalk…

We recommend that you pack books in a sturdy or specially designed moving box. These are extra sturdy and are, therefore, more resistant to the weight of the books.

9.      Packing clothes

For packing clothes, you can order separate wardrobe boxes. These are elongated and better suited for packing clothes. But, of course, you may find this a bit superfluous. That is why you can also choose to pack your clothes in a garbage bag and then put them in a normal moving box. Then, of course, you can put several clothes together in the garbage bag.

It would be best if you also had a separate chilled packaging box to store your energy drinks and snacks for moving day.
